Bassam Tariq is in talks to direct Mahershala Ali starter blade. Filmmaker Bassam Tariq, known for his work on the Liz Ahmed-led film Mogul Mowgli, is in talks with Marvel Studios to oversee the film adaptation of the popular manga Blade. Oscar-winning Mahershala Ali will take on the title of Vampire Hunter.
According to Variety, Taric’s joining will make him the sixth person of color to direct Marvel Studios’ films, after Ryan Coogler, Chloe Zhao, Destin Cretton, Taika Waititi and Nia Dacosta.
Playwright Stacy Osay-Kupour is writing the screenplay with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Created by author Marv Wolfman, Blade first appeared as a supporting character in the 1973 comic book The Tomb of Dracula #10. He is a vampire hunter – half-mortal and half immortal – who seeks to free the world from vampires as a way of avenging his mother’s murder by vampires at birth.
The character gained popularity when New Line adapted the cartoon in 1998 starring Wesley Snipes and followed the hit film with two sequels in 2002 and 2004. Actor and rapper Sticky Fingaz got the role in the 2006 television series.
