Nawaz Sharif's personal doctor, Dr. Adnan Khan, said Friday that the former prime minister's condition was "critical," while two British doctors, according to family sources, advised the Sharif family to bring Nawaz to London for receive specialized treatment immediately.

Dr. Khan also supported the view that the supreme PML-N needs to be transferred abroad to receive treatment.

"Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is critically ill," Dr. Khan said in a Twitter post, adding that the patient's platelet count was unstable despite maximum therapy.

The doctor said that the unexplained cause and the uncertain diagnosis had "complicated the general clinical scenario." He said the patient's condition requires "advanced research and specialized care."

Sharif family sources said DawnNewsTV that the family was in contact with two surgeons from a private clinic in London. According to sources, the two surgeons had advised the family to bring Nawaz to London for treatment and "genetic tests" that are not available in Pakistan.

The sources said that the platelet levels of the former prime minister could not exceed 24,000 per microliter despite treatment at the Hospital of Services for 16 days. The doctors had warned the family that a level of 50,000 and more is required for a patient to be declared fit for [air] travel.

A source from the Sharif family said Thursday Dawn that Nawaz had agreed to go to London.

"Nawaz Sharif finally agreed to go to London after doctors told him categorically that they had already exhausted all medical treatment. [options] available in Pakistan and traveling abroad is the only option left, "the source had said.

The source also said that Nawaz could go to London this week if his name is removed from the Exit Control List.

The interior ministry refers the issue of ECL to NAB

The Interior Ministry issued a statement today, saying it had received a formal request from Mian Shehbaz Sharif for the removal of Nawaz's name from the Exit Control List (ECL) for health reasons and treatment abroad.

The ministry said it had referred the matter to the National Responsibility Office (NAB). In addition, Shehbaz Sharif sent a similar request to NAB. The ministry said it also sent Nawaz health reports received from Sharif Medical City, Lahore to the "Permanent Medical Board" for input and review.

The statement says that the ministry took all necessary measures taking into account the urgency of the matter as stated by Shehbaz Sharif in his request.

On Thursday, information from the PML-N secretary, Marriyum Aurangzeb, had said that an emergency meeting of the board of doctors treating Nawaz Sharif was held after his platelets fell back to a dangerous level.

In a statement, he said doctors had stated that Nawaz's condition was "extremely critical," adding that despite all possible treatments in Pakistan, his condition was not improving.

The former prime minister was transferred to an intensive care unit (ICU) established at his Jati Umra residence of the Services Hospital on Wednesday. The PML-N said that the specialized ICU was installed in the residence with "doctors' recommendations" and that Sharif Medical City doctors would be available 24 hours a day.

During the course of treatment at the Institute of Medical Sciences Services, the former prime minister had suffered an angina attack, in addition to complaints of bleeding gums and other parts, due to his fluctuating platelets.

The Islamabad High Court had granted bail to Nawaz last week for eight weeks, suspending his seven-year sentence in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference for medical reasons. Previously, he had also obtained a bond in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case of the Lahore High Court for the same reason.
