Pursued by NAB, JUI-F leader Akram Khan Durrani files pre-arrest bail plea – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Former federal minister Akram Khan Durrani on Tuesday filed a petition with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking a pre-arrest bond in multiple investigations initiated against him by the National Office of Responsibility (NAB).

Durrani, leader of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), says he is being the victim of a key role in the Azadi March that will launch his party on October 27 against the government of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).

In his petition, the leader of the JUI-F stated that "he is being a victim and harassed by the respondents." [the chairman, deputy director and investigation officer Nadeem Fraz of NAB] although he is cooperating with them and will continue to do so. However, the pace at which the three investigations are carried out, his arrest before he can get more support from other opposition parties for Azadi March is very likely. "

Durrani faces consultations for alleged corruption in two housing projects of the Federal Government Housing Foundation, appointment of blue-eyed officers at the Pakistan Housing Authority Foundation, allocation of “out of turn” plots for mosques and induction in the Department of Public Works of Pakistan (PWD).

The petitioner states that "it belongs to Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F, which will lead the Azadi March against the government since October 27" and a Rehbar Committee was formed for the coordination and preparation of the protest.

"The petitioner has played a fundamental role in the Rehbar Committee and has in fact been representing his party in some of these committee meetings," said the petition, adding that the government "just to disturb political activities" is behind the investigations. .

The petitioner said that NAB "since its formation in 1999 has been serving primarily as a political engineering tool and a way to silence dissenting voices."

He expressed his fear that NAB could be used against the organizers of Azadi March.

The petitioner said that "he believes in accountability and, therefore, has been cooperating with the respondents, however, when the petitioner was in Quetta, due to his political activities, he learned that the NAB had issued his orders of arrest to prevent him from gathering support from different political parties in taking responsibility. "

According to the petition, the Baluchistan High Court on October 10 granted Mr. Durrani a protective bond and NAB plans to arrest him as soon as the protective bond granted expires.

With regard to NAB's questions, Mr. Durrani clarified in his petition that he is not concerned about the recruitment process carried out by the Ministry of Housing and Works or his deputy departments, since he was not a nominating authority.

The petition claimed that there were vacancies in the PWD for approximately a decade and ensured induction without further delay.

Durrani declared in the petition that he is one of the most important politicians in the country and has always done his duty in accordance with the law as prime minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and also as federal minister.

Durrani requested the court to grant bail before arrest in the three investigations.

An IHC division bank composed of Supreme Court President Athar Minallah and Judge Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb will hear the petition on Wednesday.
