Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL: Google announces new smartphone

updateDigital Trends got the chance to take a close look at this smartphone. For more information, see Pixel 4 Lab Review.

We don't want the new Pixel 4 phone to be known only as a great camera, so we've used far more advanced software and hardware to fill in two new models. It's time to meet the new Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, announced at the Made by Google event on Tuesday, October 15. This year is one of the two most interesting phones, so there was no sign of a pixel watch.

Fresh design

A few months ago, Google tweeted a Pixel 4, confirming that there was a controversial square camera bump on the back of the phone. As Apple has released iPhone 11 Pro with a similar design to get used to its unusual shape, it's not debatable right now. The Pixel 4's camera bump features two camera lenses with different sensors and flashes.

The body is not like the Pixel 3, with its neatly rounded corners, flat back panel, and cute, colorful power buttons on the sides. There are three colors and Really Black and Clearly White have merged with the new limited edition Oh So Orange. Note that the dual tone finish on the Pixel 3 model is replaced by a single texture on the back of the phone, making the Pixel 4 look more uniform and modern. The black model is glossy, while the other two models use matte glass. We talked to designers more about changes to the Pixel 4 design in an exclusive interview.

The Pixel 4 or Pixel 4 XL does not have a fingerprint sensor. Google has a "near-infrared" sensor on the front to follow Apple's lead and unlock the face even in dark environments. This means there is no fingerprint sensor on the back and no fingerprint sensor under the screen.

Two cameras

The Pixel 4's camera has a lot of anticipation on its shoulders. The Pixel 3 is one of the best camera phones we've used, but other companies, especially Huawei and Apple, have opened Google this year. How does the Pixel 4 compete? Google is finally adding a second lens to the back of the phone. 12 million pixels. 28mm main lens with 16 mega pixels. Annie Leibovitz did not love but loved it with a 14mm telephoto lens. But Pixel 4 doesn't have unlimited full resolution Google Photos storage.

Live Update: Pixel 4 Made by Google Event

More from Google Pixel Events

Real lenses are just the beginning. Google's expertise in computer photography is what makes the Pixel 4 special. There are four new software-based features that make your Pixel 4 camera creative. Live HDR + helps you frame your photos by representing what you see on the screen. Double exposure mode uses sliders for brightness and shadow to change the background exposure, and the new learning-based white balance determines what needs to be shown white on your phone and what conditions it doesn't.

Portrait mode uses new depth models in both lens and dual pixel technology to achieve more accurate depth for cameras and larger objects. Google has worked on better hair and hair recognition. Finally, Night Sight integrates machine learning to improve white balance and take amazing starscape and moonlit landscape photos.

The camera has a 2x telephoto lens and a Super Res hybrid zoom, which I recommend using for close-up rather than cropping later. HDR + is back too. All nine burst pictures were taken underexposed and then aligned using software to reduce average noise. The result is to lighten the shadows, giving details throughout the photo. The front of the Pixel 4 has an 8 mega pixel selfie camera with a 90 degree viewing angle.

Staring at the screen

We mentioned that there are many new technologies. The title here is Project Soli, Google's gesture control system debuting on Pixel 4. The various sensors on the bezel above the screen allow you to control certain aspects of your phone without gestures and without touching the screen at all. This feature is called motion sense and works in several areas, from music control to muting calls and turning off alarms. For example, swiping in midair will switch between tracks in a manner similar to what you see on the LG G8 ThinQ.

We've tried to make Motion Sense understand what you want and don't track unintended movements. It understands body language and puts movement in the context of what your phone does. Since your phone detects your surroundings, we added the option to turn off motion detection when it's not useful. It also ensures that your data is not stored or shared with other Google services.

The motion detection sensor, front camera and new face unlocking technology are hidden inside the bezel and are thicker than the lower bezel. It's not a bezelless beauty like the Huawei Mate 30 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus. It also means that one of the front speakers has moved to the floor.

Main specifications

  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
  • Memory: 6 GB
  • Save: 64 GB default, 128 GB optional
  • MicroSD Storage: none
  • Screen size: 5.7 inches, 6.3 inches
  • Connectivity USB-C, Bluetooth 5.0
  • battery: 2,800 mAh, 3,700 mAh
  • operating system : Android 10

You can choose between two screen sizes. You can choose Pixel 4 and 5.7 inch display or Pixel 4 XL and 6.3 inch screen. Both offer a very smooth scrolling speed of 90Hz and a responsive game. It's a desirable feature you've never experienced before. Pixel 4 XL has a higher resolution than Pixel 4.

Both phones share almost the same specifications. With 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage, the OnePlus 7T or Asus ROG Phone 2 doesn't have the 855 Plus, but the Snapdragon 855 processor is inside. Each Pixel comes with the latest version of Android 10 and is guaranteed an update for the next three years.

Apart from the screen, the Pixel 4 has a slightly smaller battery capacity of 2,800 mAh. The Pixel 4 XL has a larger 3700 mAh cell. Both phones have wireless charging. Finally, there is connectivity. The Pixel 4 has room for a single SIM card and eSIM. eSIM works like a second SIM inside your phone, so it's great for traveling, except that you can rewrite it as many times as you want without having to swap physical cards.

Next Generation Assistant and Recorder

Google talked about the next generation Google Assistant at Google I / O earlier this year and actually debuted on Pixel 4. It's much faster, allows you to process more commands locally, and it's easier than ever to use assistants to control aspects of your phone. You also have the option to delete data stored in the Assistant using your voice.

The new recorder app is installed on your phone and delivers conversations in real time, even if your phone is not connected to the internet. You can also search for keywords later on all saved recordings.

5G

Despite many rumors, the new Pixel 4 phone doesn't have 5G, and features haven't been discussed at all during the event.

Pricing and Availability

Your Pixel 4 phone is now pre-ordered and can be purchased. Pixel 4 phones are available from all major carriers in the US, starting at $ 800. Pixel 4 comes with a 3-month Google One membership and 100GB of cloud storage. You can already receive some Google Pixel deals without having to use the Pixel 3 or 3XL, but now they are some of the best smartphone deals.

Updated on October 24th: Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are available for purchase.
