Intel Completely Skips Desktop 10nm Chip and Announces New Roadmap Leakage

Intel's struggle against 10nm has been well documented over the years, and recent reports do not indicate that the situation is improving. According to the German site Hardwareluxx, Intel reported that with the aim of the 2022 release, 7nm chips could be used for desktop-bound CPUs without using 10nm process nodes.

This tip comes from a trusted insider who claims that Intel can't meet the mass market demand for 10nm desktop processors. This should all be classified as rumor, but AMD has already moved to 7nm this year with Ryzen 3.

Intel's current desktop components are based on the latest 14nm ++ process technology, so you'll have to wait almost two years to see the benefits of smaller process nodes.

According to the leaked roadmap, the 9th Generation Coffee Lake-S Refresh window will end in the third quarter of Intel's corporate year in 2020. Then Intel's 10th generation Comet Lake-S will expand from the second quarter of 2020 to the second quarter. In 2021 (the corporate year), Rocket Lake-S begins in the second quarter of 2021. Comet Lake-S and Rocket Lake-S are based on Intel's 14nm process.

Comet Lake-S can have up to 10 cores and 20 to 35 threads, and requires a TDP of 35 to 125 watts. It supports DDR4 memory, Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps), 4K content and HDR, PCIe 3.0, Intel Optane and more.

Little is known about the Rocket Lake-S family, but it is expected to deliver up to 10 cores. Intel implies Intel porting the latest core technologies to the Rocket Lake platform for better performance.

Finally, after Rocket Lake-S, it will be the 7nm Meteor Lake-S, the first desktop chip to use a new process node since Intel launched the Broadwell platform in 2015, which will be Intel's Ocean Cove core design currently under development.
