‘Don’t look towards govt for jobs,’ Fawad Chaudhry tells nation in a U-turn – Pakistan

Receding from a key promise of Pakistan's Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) manifesto, the Minister of Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhry, on Tuesday asked the public not to seek employment in the government.

Addressing the second International Conference of Deans of Engineering Institutions in Islamabad, the minister said the government could not provide jobs to the public. "Instead, I want to tell you that the government is going to dissolve 400 departments," he added.

Chaudhry also said: "In Pakistan or in other parts of the world, governments are shrinking.

"It is very important to make people realize that the government cannot provide jobs. If we start looking for jobs in the government, the framework of our economy will collapse."

"It was the mindset of the 1970s that governments would provide jobs, now the private sector provides jobs."

However, minutes after he delivered the comments, Chaudhry turned to Twitter to say his statement had been taken out of context.

"[I am] amazed at how each statement issued by me becomes a headline without context. "

He added: "I said that the private sector and not the government provides jobs. The government has to create an environment where jobs are available. It shouldn't be the case that everyone is looking for a government job."

The PTI had said in its manifesto that "it will create 10 million jobs over five years in key sectors: SMEs, housing, ICT, health, education, green economy and tourism."

Chaudhry himself had said in January that 10 million new jobs would soon be created for young people, while 500,000 houses would be built for the poor as promised by the PTI government.

Earlier this year, the Minister of Planning and Development, Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar, had said that the government would create 10 million jobs in five years and improve the sustainability of economic growth by building fundamentals and structural reforms. "Ours is a reformist government," he had said.
