Suspected ATM robber was subjected to torture by police, says lawyer – Pakistan

Salahuddin Ayubi's father, an alleged ATM thief who died in police custody, alleged Wednesday that his son was subjected to brutal torture by officials from the police station of Rahim Yar Khan city A division .

Ayubi was arrested by police in Rahim Yar Khan for allegedly stealing an ATM last week and was reported dead Sunday. On Monday, a first informative report (FIR) was filed against the city's Division A Station House officer, Mehmoodul Hassan, and the sub-inspector of the investigative officers Shafaat Ali and assistant assistant inspector Matloob Hussain on the complaint of Ayubi's father, Mohammad Afzaal, who said his son was mentally challenged.

Earlier today, Afzaal's legal representative, Usama Khawar Ghuman, shared with Sunrise images of Ayubi's body in which multiple bruises could be seen on the arms and legs of the deceased. The lawyer insisted that the bruises were "clear evidence" of torture. The photos were taken before Ayubi was buried in Kamoke, a city in the Gujranwala district, Ghuman said.

The lawyer regretted that the officials nominated in the FIR were still free, but said they would "knock on all doors" for justice. He expressed the hope that Ayubi's case would end the "cruel culture" of police brutality.

Meanwhile, Rahim Yar Khan District Police Officer wrote a memo to a session judge and requested that a judge conduct a judicial investigation into the matter.

Police spokesman Zeeshan Randhawa, in a statement, urged the public not to "doubt the sincerity of the police" and wait for the judicial investigation report. He said the officials who were nominated in the FIR had been suspended and added that "yes [police] they had bad intentions, they could have hidden Salahuddin's body and announced that he had escaped. "

"The police did not cover up [the matter]", adds the statement.

A video of Ayubi, a resident of Gujranwala, had gone viral on social media a few days ago in which he could be seen breaking into an ATM in Faisalabad and jokingly sticking his tongue at the camera in the corner of the cabin and The one installed on the machine itself.

He was arrested at Rahim Yar Khan last week after he was allegedly caught stealing from an ATM. According to Randhawa, Ayubi was behaving like a "madman" locked up when he suddenly felt bad. He said the man was unconscious when he was transferred to the emergency room at Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
