In a sudden turn of events, Dr. Shahbaz Gill on Friday presented his resignation as spokesman for the Punjab Chief Minister, Usman Buzdar.
"I hereby resign from the position of official spokesperson for CM Punjab," Gill said in a resignation note addressed to the prime minister, whose copy is available with DawnNewsTV.
The news comes after Gill tweeted Friday afternoon that he had made an "important decision" on the morning of today. "I will share it with you soon," he wrote.
The name of the person who will replace it has not yet been announced.
Among other changes in the Punjab cabinet announced today, Awn Chaudhry was removed as an advisor to the Punjab prime minister.
"The prime minister is pleased to appoint Mr. Asif Mehmood as an advisor to Prime Minister Punjab instead of Mr. Muhammad Awn Chaudhry with immediate effect," said a notification issued by Buzdar's office.
Mehmood will act as Advisor to the Chief Minister Punjab on "Matters related to the Horticultural Authorities of Punjab (PHA) and Tourism," he added.
Separately, Prime Minister Buzdar, in a statement to the acting governor of Punjab, advised him to appoint Malik Asad Ali, a member of the Punjab Assembly, as provincial minister.
"In compliance with Article 132 (1), read with Article 105 (1) of the Constitution of Pakistan, the Governor of Punjab is advised to appoint Malik Asad Ali, a member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab (PP-168) […] as provincial minister, ”said the letter.
It was not immediately announced what ministry Ali will have.
Later in the day, the interim governor of Punjab, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, administered the oath of the provincial minister's office. With his appointment, the number of ministers in the Punjab cabinet has increased to 36.
