The National Office of Accountability (NAB) arrested senior PPP leader Syed Khursheed Shah on Wednesday in a case involving his alleged assets beyond the media.
"NAB Sukkur has arrested Syed Khursheed Shah on assets beyond the case," said a brief handwritten statement issued by NAB Islamabad.
It will be presented to the corresponding accountability court in Sukkur for return tomorrow, the press release added.
The unconditional PPP was arrested in a joint operation by the Rawalpindi and Sukkur chapters of the NAB, DawnNewsTV reported. He will be in the custody of NAB Rawalpindi tonight.
Shah was taken by almost 20 NAB staff members and police during a raid on his Islamabad residence, domestic staff in his home said. DawnNewsTV.
They claimed that the NAB and police personnel had not allowed any discussion or let the servants take out their mobile phones before they took Shah with them.
The president of the PPP, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, convened a press conference following Shah's arrest.
In reaction to the development, the PPP senior leader, Sherry Rehman, said that Shah, an MNA, was arrested while the National Assembly session was underway without intimidating the NA speaker to "promote his damnable goals."
"On the one hand, we say that the law of the jungle prevails in the world through which Kashmir is being subjected to state oppression; it seems that something similar is happening here."
Sindh Prime Minister Murad Ali Shah, another PPP leader, called Shah's arrest a "very wrong step" by the government.
"I had Khursheed Shah sahib flee the country? Had he refused to attend any investigation against him? "He asked. He added that the arrest will damage the expression of unity that is currently required of the nation.
Multiple cases of corruption against Shah are under investigation with NAB. In 2012, an accountability court ordered NAB to file a referral against it for a complaint related to an alleged accumulation of illegitimate assets.
In 2013, NAB reopened two cases of corruption against Shah under the directives of the Lahore High Court.
In July of this year, the retired president of the NAB, Javed Iqbal, had approved nine investigations against different personalities, including Shah.
