A Gujranwala man, whose video of stealing an ATM went viral due to his antics, died early Sunday while in police custody.
The man identified as Salahuddin Ayubi of the Kamonkay district of Gujranwala was arrested on Friday. According to the spokesman for the district police officer, Zeeshan Randhawa, Ayubi was behaving like a "madman" locked up when he suddenly felt bad. He said the man was unconscious when he was transferred to the emergency room at Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
According to Randhawa, Ayubi was dead when he was taken to the hospital. According to the hospital coordinator, Dr. Burhan Mustafa, the director of the emergency room could not comment on the condition in which he was taken to the hospital.
The DPO spokesman said the reason for Ayubi's death would be determined after a post mortem report is issued. In addition, he said that DPO Umar Farooq Salamat had set up an investigation team, headed by the Superintendent of Police Investigation, to investigate the matter.
In a video that went viral on social media a few days ago, Ayubi was seen stealing an ATM card after opening a machine in Faisalabad and sticking out his tongue both at the camera in the corner of the cabin and at the installed on the machine itself.
On Friday, he once again entered an ATM booth, this time in Rahim Yar Khan, and was in the process of breaking the outside of the machine when he was caught with his hands in the dough by other customers. The incident occurred on Shahi Road in Habib Bank Limited.
A case was filed against the suspect under Sections 411 (dishonorably received stolen property), 427 (mischief causing damage in the amount of fifty rupees), 454 (search or trespassing to commit a crime punishable by imprisonment) and 380 (robbery in housing, house, etc.) of the Penal Code of Pakistan.
