ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan and a visiting Chinese commander reaffirmed on Tuesday their countries' commitment to collaborate for peace and stability in the region.
"Pakistan and China will continue to consult closely and coordinate for the promotion of peace and stability in the region and the maintenance of strategic balance," said the Prime Minister's Office after a Chinese delegation, headed by the Vice President of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of General of China, Xu Qiliang, asked Mr. Khan.
General Xu heads a high-level delegation in Pakistan to discuss issues of mutual interest to Pakistan and China. His visit to bilateral discussions on regional security and the improvement of defense collaboration took place in the context of intense tensions between India and Pakistan due to the Indian measure to revoke the autonomous state of Kashmir in the hands of India and its fork in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Leadership thanks Beijing for its support in the UNSC
China criticized the Indian action and supported Pakistan's request to convene an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC), held on August 16.
Prime Minister Khan, thanking China for supporting Pakistan's approach to the UNSC on Indian action, said "the unique quality of the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Association" was an anchor for peace and stability in the region and beyond.
The prime minister warned that Indian actions represented a threat to peace and security. He repeated the warning that India could organize a false flag operation to divert the world's attention from its crimes.
He was concerned that the brutal repression of Kashmir could trigger a wave of extremism that could destabilize the region.
General Xu reiterated the commitment of the Chinese leadership with the tradition that both countries support each other on issues of central national interest. He stressed that South Asia needed stability and economic development and resolution of pending disputes.
The president meets the commander
President Arif Alvi, in his meeting with General Xu, said Pakistan deeply valued China's defense cooperation with Pakistan and support on national security issues.
During the visit of Gen Xu, a memorandum of understanding was signed to improve defense cooperation between Pakistan and China and the development of Pakistan's army capabilities.
President Alvi thanked China for its support in the UNSC. Meanwhile, General Xu assured China's continued support for Pakistan.
